The Heart of Philadelphia’s Game Day Cuisine

For Eagles fans, game day isn’t just about football; it’s a celebration of community, spirit, and, most importantly, incredible food! While the iconic Philadelphia Cheesesteak often steals the spotlight, our city boasts a vibrant sandwich scene that includes the legendary roast pork with broccoli rabe and our equally drool-worthy roast beef sandwiches. When Land O’Lakes and The Feedfeed challenged me to craft a sandwich inspired by my hometown using their fantastic Deli American cheese, I knew I had to create something truly special, something that would make any Philadelphian proud.

I’ve been a long-time fan of Land O’Lakes products. Growing up, a trip to the deli counter always meant ordering their Deli American. It was a family favorite, and to this day, it remains a staple in my own kitchen. There’s a reason it’s America’s #1 Deli American cheese: the commitment to high-quality ingredients and the assurance that it’s always sliced fresh to order at your favorite deli counter makes all the difference. Its creamy texture and rich flavor melt beautifully, making it the ideal complement to a hearty sandwich.

Crafting the Perfect Philly French Dip

Inspired by the classic French Dip but infused with that unmistakable Philly spirit, I decided to create these incredibly tender and utterly delicious Philly French Dip Sandwiches. I served them at a preseason game party, and let me tell you, they were an absolute hit – a resounding WINNER in every sense of the word! The secret lies in the slow-roasted chuck roast, which becomes so impossibly tender it practically melts in your mouth.

Raw beef chuck roast seasoned and seared in a Dutch oven, ready for slow roasting to become tender French Dip meat.

My recipe begins with a boneless beef chuck roast, seasoned and seared to perfection before being slow-roasted for two to three hours in a rich, flavorful liquid of beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, and onions. This creates not only incredibly tender, shreddable beef but also a deeply savory au jus that is essential for dipping. Once the roast is fall-apart tender, I shred it with two forks, mixing some of that luscious gravy back into the meat to keep it moist and flavorful.

Tender, shredded roast beef simmering in rich au jus, a key component for the ultimate French Dip Sandwiches.

The Anatomy of a Champion’s Sandwich

I don’t believe in skimping on flavor, especially when it comes to game day food. Each of these magnificent sandwiches boasts a generous three slices of Land O’Lakes Deli American. Here’s how we build these beauties:

  • A slice of creamy Deli American rests on the bottom half of a toasted kaiser roll.
  • Next comes a piled-high portion of that juicy, melt-in-your-mouth shredded roast beef.
  • A hearty helping of sweet, caramelized sautéed peppers and onions adds another layer of flavor and texture.
  • Finally, two more slices of Land O’Lakes Deli American crown the filling, ensuring every bite is cheesy perfection.

These assembled wonders are then briefly baked in the oven until the Deli American cheese is perfectly melted and gloriously gooey. Believe me, it’s even better than it sounds – pure sandwich heaven!

Serving Suggestions: The Full Philly Experience

To complete your game day feast, serve these incredible sandwiches with crispy fries, a crunchy pickle spear, and plenty of extra au jus on the side for ultimate dipping pleasure. A cold beer or your favorite beverage makes the perfect accompaniment. This is game day done right, Philly style!

I hope you and your guests enjoy a delicious taste of the city I call home. Go Eagles!

These Philly French Dip Sandwiches with tender roast beef, savory peppers, sweet onions, and melted Land O’Lakes Deli American cheese are PERFECT for football season! They’re truly the Sandwich of Champions!

Prep Time: 20 mins

Cook Time: 3 hrs

Total Time: 3 hrs 20 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 lb. boneless beef chuck roast
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup red cooking wine
  • 2 cups beef broth, low sodium
  • 1 Tbsp. worcestershire sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3-4 Tbsp. butter
  • 4 cups yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 3 cups green bell pepper, ribs and seeds removed and sliced into thin strips
  • 8 kaiser rolls
  • 24 slices Land O’Lakes® Deli White American Cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Season the chuck roast evenly with salt, pepper, and flour. Sear the roast for 5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove to a plate.
  3. Add one cup of the sliced onions to the Dutch oven. Cook for 3-4 minutes until slightly soft and translucent. Deglaze the pan with the red wine, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom. Place the roast back into the pan and add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then cover and place in the oven to cook for 2 1/2 – 3 hours, or until the meat is tender enough to shred with two forks. (Cooking time may vary based on your oven and roast size.)
  4. While the roast cooks, melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the remaining 3 cups of onions and 3 cups of green bell peppers. Cook until softened and lightly browned, about 9-10 minutes. Remove from heat and place onions and peppers in a bowl. Set aside until ready to assemble sandwiches.
  5. Once cooked, remove the roast from the oven. Carefully remove the meat from the broth. Shred the meat with two forks. Strain the broth, skimming off any excess fat to create your au jus. Add some of the strained au jus back into the shredded meat to keep it moist. Save the extra au jus for serving on the side in small dipping bowls.
  6. Slice kaiser rolls horizontally and place the bottom halves on a rimmed baking sheet. Top the bottom half of each roll with one slice of Land O’Lakes Deli White American Cheese. Then, evenly distribute a generous helping of the shredded beef. Top each with the sautéed peppers and onions, and then two more slices of cheese per sandwich. Place the top half of the kaiser roll on top of each sandwich. Bake in the preheated oven for 4-5 minutes, just until the cheese begins to melt and the rolls are lightly toasted. Serve immediately with extra au jus on the side.

Tips for Success

  • Choosing Your Roast: A good quality chuck roast is key. It has enough fat to render down and keep the meat incredibly moist during the slow roasting process.
  • Perfect Au Jus: Don’t skip straining the broth! This ensures a clear, flavorful dipping sauce. Skimming off the fat makes it even more enjoyable.
  • Caramelized Veggies: Cooking the onions and peppers until lightly browned adds a wonderful sweetness and depth of flavor that complements the savory beef.
  • Cheese Matters: Land O’Lakes Deli American cheese melts beautifully, creating that iconic gooey texture perfect for a hearty sandwich.
  • Roll Choice: Kaiser rolls are sturdy enough to hold the generous filling and provide a good crusty texture, but you can also use hoagie rolls or crusty French bread.
